Jal Jeevan Mission

Launched in August 2019 by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the Jal Jeevan Mission aims to provide every rural household in India with access to safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections by 2024. The mission focuses on ensuring that water supply is sustainable, reliable, and of good quality, thereby improving the quality of life for rural communities. In Karnataka, the initiative is particularly crucial as many villages still rely on unsafe water sources. The mission not only addresses the immediate need for clean water but also encourages community participation in managing water resources effectively.

Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, eligible households can receive financial assistance for the installation of household tap connections. The government provides ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 per household, depending on the specific requirements and infrastructure needed. This amount is aimed at covering the costs of materials and labor for setting up the water supply system. Additionally, the scheme promotes the use of rainwater harvesting techniques and encourages communities to maintain their water supply systems, ensuring long-term sustainability.

To be eligible for the Jal Jeevan Mission, applicants must be from rural households. There are no specific age or income criteria, making it accessible to all families living in rural areas. However, the household must not already have a tap water connection. The focus is primarily on those living in villages and underserved areas where access to safe drinking water is a challenge.

Individuals or households that already have a functional tap water connection are not eligible for this scheme. Additionally, urban households and families living in cities or towns are excluded from applying. For example, if a family resides in a rural area but has access to municipal water supply through a tap, they cannot benefit from the Jal Jeevan Mission.

To apply for the Jal Jeevan Mission, applicants need to provide the following documents: 1. Aadhaar card for identity verification 2. Proof of residence (like a ration card or voter ID) 3. Bank passbook or bank statement 4. Any other relevant documents that may support the application, such as a water source identification report.

Ensure to identify suitable water sources within a radius of 2-3 km from your household as part of the application process.

The Jal Jeevan Mission is an ongoing initiative, with continuous applications accepted until 2026. While there are no specific deadlines for application submission, it is advisable to apply as soon as possible to ensure timely processing and installation of the water supply system.
