Sikkim's Sabbatical Leave Scheme

Launched by the Government of Sikkim, the Sabbatical Leave Scheme aims to provide government employees with the chance to step away from their official duties for a specified period. This initiative, introduced in 2022, is overseen by the Department of Personnel, Government of Sikkim. The primary objective is to encourage personal and professional development by allowing employees to pursue educational opportunities, travel experiences, or even entrepreneurial ventures. By supporting the growth of its workforce, the government hopes to foster a more skilled and knowledgeable public service sector.

Under the Sabbatical Leave Scheme, eligible government employees can avail themselves of a leave period of up to 2 years. During this time, they will receive a monthly stipend of ₹30,000 to support their endeavors. This financial assistance is aimed at covering basic living expenses while they focus on their goals. Additionally, employees can use this sabbatical to enhance their skills, which can lead to promotions or better job opportunities upon their return.

To be eligible for the Sabbatical Leave Scheme, applicants must be current government employees in Sikkim. There are no specific age limits or income restrictions, making this scheme accessible to a wide range of individuals within the government sector. However, applicants must have completed at least 5 years of service to qualify for the sabbatical leave.

Certain individuals are not eligible for the Sabbatical Leave Scheme. For example, employees who are on probation or those who have pending disciplinary actions against them cannot apply. Additionally, employees who have already availed of sabbatical leave in the past 5 years are also excluded from this scheme.

To apply for the Sabbatical Leave Scheme, applicants must prepare the following documents: 1. Aadhaar card 2. Employment certificate from the relevant department 3. Leave application form 4. Detailed proposal outlining the purpose of the sabbatical 5. Bank passbook or statement for stipend disbursement 6. Any additional documents that support the sabbatical purpose, such as admission letters for educational programs.

1. Contact the State Government HR Department to gather detailed information about the scheme. 2. Prepare all required documents listed above. 3. Fill out the leave application form accurately. 4. Submit the application along with the supporting documents to your department head. 5. Await approval from the HR Department, which will review your application and provide feedback.

The Sabbatical Leave Scheme operates on a rolling basis, with applications accepted throughout the year. However, it is advisable to submit applications at least 3 months before the intended start date of the sabbatical to allow for processing. For 2026, ensure to check for any specific deadlines or updates from the Government of Sikkim.
