SHREYAS and SHRESHTA Schemes and Self Help Groups

The SHREYAS (Scheme for Higher Education Youth in Apprenticeship and Skills) and SHRESHTA (Scheme for Residential Education for Students in High Schools in Targeted Areas) Schemes were launched by the Government of India to promote educational excellence and empower communities. The SHREYAS scheme focuses on providing students with opportunities in apprenticeships and skill development, while SHRESHTA aims to enhance the educational infrastructure in targeted areas. Both schemes are celebrated on Independence Day to honor students who excel in their studies and Self Help Groups (SHGs) that contribute significantly to society. By recognizing these achievers, the government hopes to inspire others and foster a culture of learning and community service across the nation.

Under the SHREYAS scheme, students can receive up to ₹10,000 per month during their apprenticeship period, which can last for 6 to 12 months. Additionally, successful candidates may also be eligible for a one-time scholarship of ₹50,000 upon completion of their apprenticeship. For the SHRESHTA scheme, outstanding Self Help Groups can receive recognition awards ranging from ₹1,00,000 to ₹5,00,000, depending on their contributions and achievements. These financial incentives aim to motivate students and empower SHGs to continue their excellent work.

Eligibility for the SHREYAS scheme includes students aged 18 to 25 years who are enrolled in recognized educational institutions. For the SHRESHTA scheme, any Self Help Group that has demonstrated outstanding contributions to their community is eligible, regardless of age or income. There are no specific income criteria for either scheme, making it accessible to a wide range of participants.

Individuals who do not meet the age criteria for the SHREYAS scheme, such as those below 18 or above 25 years, cannot apply. Additionally, Self Help Groups that have not made significant contributions or do not have a registered status may be ineligible for the SHRESHTA scheme. For example, a student who has dropped out of school or a Self Help Group that has not conducted any community service activities in the past year would not qualify.

To apply for the SHREYAS scheme, students need to provide the following documents: 1. Aadhaar card, 2. Educational certificate (latest), 3. Bank passbook for scholarship disbursement, 4. Passport-sized photographs. For SHRESHTA, Self Help Groups must submit: 1. Registration certificate of the SHG, 2. Aadhaar cards of members, 3. Proof of community service activities, 4. Bank account details.
