Aquaculture Insurance Scheme

The Aquaculture Insurance Scheme is an initiative launched by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India, in 2020. Its primary objective is to provide financial protection to aquaculture farmers against losses caused by natural calamities, diseases, or other unforeseen events. This scheme aims to promote sustainable aquaculture practices and ensure that farmers can recover quickly from setbacks, thus supporting the growth of the aquaculture sector in India. By providing insurance coverage, the government aims to enhance the livelihoods of farmers and encourage more individuals to engage in aquaculture activities.

Under the Aquaculture Insurance Scheme, farmers can receive insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per hectare for losses incurred due to natural disasters or diseases. The scheme covers various types of aquaculture, including freshwater and brackish water farming. Additionally, farmers can claim compensation based on the extent of loss, with a minimum payout of ₹25,000 for small-scale farmers. This financial support helps farmers to recover and reinvest in their aquaculture activities, ensuring sustainability and growth.

To be eligible for the Aquaculture Insurance Scheme, applicants must be engaged in aquaculture activities, which includes fish farming, shrimp farming, and other related practices. There are no age restrictions, and income levels do not affect eligibility. However, applicants must be actively involved in aquaculture and demonstrate their farming activities through documentation.

Individuals who do not engage in aquaculture activities, such as those who are involved solely in agriculture or other unrelated professions, are not eligible for this scheme. Additionally, farmers who have not registered their aquaculture business or do not have the necessary licenses may also be excluded from applying.

To apply for the Aquaculture Insurance Scheme, applicants must submit the following documents: 1. Aadhaar card 2. Income certificate 3. Bank passbook or bank statement 4. Proof of aquaculture activity (such as registration documents or licenses) 5. Any other documents as specified by the fisheries department.
